An Impromptu ActiveRain MeetUp... If Roy Can Do It, So Can We!

An Impromptu ActiveRain MeetUp..If Roy Can Do It, So Can We!

The Impromptu ActiveRain MeetUp!

I’ve been attending a monthly Women’s Networking Group in Delray Beach for several years.  It’s not a hardcore leads  group.... no restrictions like only 1 Realtor or 1 CPA ... and all women are invited, whether they’re working or not.

So imagine my surprise when I walked in and was introduced to Eileen Burns!  Her back was to the window and with the glare all I saw was someone by the name of Eileen with a lot of glare behind her.

But wait.... Eileen Burns.... I know an Eileen Burns from ActiveRain down in Broward County!

Eileen and Kathy

What a treat!  Eileen came as a guest of our speaker, Gina Bender, of The Reinvention Studio.

We’d met at the first ActiveRain MeetUp in September 2011.   I’m glad she was at the Networking lunch and hope she’ll join us for more.

You just never know when you’re going to have an

Impromptu ActiveRain MeetUp!

International Firefighters Day is May 4- Why Not Stop and Honor Your Local Firefighters!

International Firefighters Day is May 4- Why Not Stop and Honor Your Local Firefighters!

IFFD RibbonSince 9/11 so many of us have been more aware of our First Responders, and that includes our Firefighters.  May 4 is your chance to take a moment to honor all Firefighters and your local Firefighters as well.  While we shouldn’t have to have a special day to remind us to honor these brave men and women, in 1999 J.J. Edmondson, a volunteer Firefighter in Australia sought support via the Internet for a special day to honor fallen and all Firefighters.  He was inspired after 5 Firefighters responding to a call for help to fight a large wildfire perished when their truck was engulfed in flames.

The red and blue ribbon a symbol of IFFD is of a special cut.... 5 cm.  long and 1cm wide with the 2 colors joined at the top.  It is said the red represents fire and the blue represents water.  And, we all know those colors to represent emergency services.

Did you know that as of this writing there have been 26 Firefighters killed in the Line of Duty in the United States in 2012.  Seventy-eight died in the line of duty in 2011.

The Patron Saint of Firefighters is St. Florian who is thought to be first known commander of Firefightersa firefighting squad in the Roman Empire.

What can you do?

Educate your family on fire safety.

If you have access to your local Fire-Rescue Station, let them know how much you appreciate their service.

Thank your first responder when you see them.

Sound-Off is the first Sunday in May.  At noon local time, stop and observe a moment of silence for those who have given their lives in the line of duty.  Some community Fire Departments will sound their sirens for 30 seconds to be followed by 1 minute of silence.

Thank you FireFighters for all you do

and for the sacrifices you make.

Here’s some photos from my Delray Beach Firefighters #4.  I dropped off toys for Delray Beach Holiday Toy Drive.

Delray Beach Fire-Rescue Station #4

And there’s a beautiful video and song and YouTube called Come To My Rescue.

Cinco de Mayo in Delray Beach- May 5th-Celebrate the day!

Cinco de Mayo in Delray Beach-  May 5th- Celebrate the Day

Cinco De MayoContrary to what you might think, Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexican Independence Day!  May 5th actually commemorates the victory of the Mexican army at Puebla over the French army during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862.

While not a strategic battle in the Mexican win over the French,  the battle at Puebla helped to give hope to the Mexican resistance, which did defeat the French in 1867.

Here in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a celebration of the Mexican heritage and culture.  We celebrate with parades, festivals, dancing, and of course margaritas!

If you are in Delray Beach you can celebrate at:

14th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival from 2-10PM
Old School Square-
51 N. Swinton Avenue

$10/admission- Children under 10 are free

From 2-7PM Children’s Events- including Pinata Breaking!
Live music on the Stage at Old School Square

The 6th Annual Cinco de Mayo Chihuahua Races!
Held Saturday May 5th  5PM and 6PM

Cinco de Mayo

And for local Mexican dining:

LaBamba- 4285 W. Atlantic Avenue-Delray Beach-561-499-7996

La Fiesta Cafe- 2275 South Federal Hwy- Delray Beach  561-266-8558
(excellent fresh salsa and I highly recommend!)

Lost Dog in Palm Beach County? Here's What You Can Do!

Lost Dog in Palm Beach County?  Here’s What You Can Do!

dogOur pets are part of our family.  Their unconditional love for us is the greatest gift we could receive which is why we  put up with their fleas, barking,  “accidents” and demands on our time.

So if a family member goes missing our hearts sink and we begin our frantic search.   Here's what you can do.

PRECAUTIONS:
* Check your yard for “escape” routes.  My dog, Lucky, was an escape artist.   Check for holes in the fence, broken locks on your gate.
* Get a leash!    And make sure they are wearing their dog tags! You don’t want “Born Free” playing in their heads as soon as they step out of the door.
*  Ask your Veterinarian about placing a microchip in your dog or cat.  There are several types of microchips and some have a GPS tracking device in them.
If you place a GPS tracking device in your pet there is usually a small monthly fee involved.

WHAT TO DO:

In addition to the traditional method of driving through your neighborhood calling out your dog’s name,  the Internet has given us additional tools.........

Palm Beach County-through its Animal Care & Control (PAWS) you can search for your pet, adopt a pet, or register a pet you’ve found.

Craigslist- it’s free so it’s worth a try.  Use the same precautions you would for any other Internet transaction.

FidoFinder.com-You can register a pet you’ve lost or one you’ve found.

Facebook-I found a Facebook page Petlog Lost & Found where you can post a photo of the pet you’ve lost or found.

American Kennel Club /Companion Animal Recovery- this is an affiliate of the AKC and is the largest not-for-profit pet identification and recovery service provider.

The Center For Lost Pets-this is another central Internet site where you can search for or list lost pets.

These are just a few of the new-age tools you can use to help you find their lost pet.

Points to Remember-

* Make sure you have a recent photo of your pet.
*If you do use any of these services, you are responsible for making sure you contact information is up-to-date.
*Have contact information on your pet’s tag not only for you but for your vet.
*Contact your local shelters and visit them daily if you can.
*Advertise the old fashioned way with flyers placed in local stores or veterinarian offices.

lucky
