Actively Raining Thoughts-Room Service Home Staging

My Thoughts; My Blog!

My One Tool My Business Could Not Live Without...

activerain in my tool box Even though I began my business in 2007, I look at February 6, 2008 as the true beginning of my home staging company... for that is the day I joined ActiveRain.

Working as a Home Stager means working on your own.   We start out on our own, choosing our company name (I’d bet many wish we could that one over), designing a logo,  getting business cards, and as in my case, building our own website.

When I started Room Service Home Staging,  I knew nothing of SEO or Google juice.  I had no idea how to work with text boxes or tag or keywords.   I did know that I needed a website.  That was it.

I had my cell phone and fax machine, I had a website, such as it was and was ready to start staging.  Only problem was that no one knew who I was.  And,  Sellers in Palm Beach County were watching their property values drop.  If they needed to sell their home,  most knew it would be for a loss.  The last thing they wanted to think of was putting any money into a house they would be leaving and on which they would make little or no money.

My marketing efforts consisted of  joining the local Chamber of Commerce and having business cards printed.   I was a Home Stager... surely they’ll call.

Hello... welcome to the new millenium …. Social Media and Internet Strategies!

ActiveRain gave and continues to give me the tools to compete in this social media and bloggingInternet/Social Media/Google driven world......

1. How to write a blog that is not only informative but also good for SEO rankings.
2. How to use FaceBook, Twitter, Google+, Linkedin,Pinterest and any other Social Media to increase my Internet  presence.
3.  Learning opportunities every day at ActiveRain, not only about Blogging and SEO, but all aspects of Real Estate, mortgages, home inspection, and construction.
4. An amazing group of friends throughout the country and Canada to whom I can turn when I need help, advice or an opinion about my business.

The majority of my business comes from clients finding me via the Internet.  When I began I paid monthly for Google Adwords.  I received calls every week from companies wanting me to pay them to increase my Internet presence.   What I learned from the Webinars, posts and ActiveRain contests allowed me to drop paying for Google Adwords and write the kind of blogs on my own for Google juice.

When I asked a client how she found me this was her response:

“The Internet...I had no choice...you’re everywhere.”

I no longer wait and hope the phone will ring.  Using ActiveRain makes me more proactive in my marketing efforts.  I can target areas using keywords.

My day begins with ActiveRain.... posting and taking a quick “hello” to my ActiveRain friends.  And, it ends on ActiveRain with comments and “good nights”.

ActiveRain is so much a part of my business plan that I look at every part of my day... every event... every thought as a possible blog topic.

Take  away ActiveRain?  Not going to happen.  It is my office... it is my mentor... it is where my “co-workers” are.... it keeps me accountable ….it challenges me to go one step further.

I know this may sound like I’m stating the obvious and pandering

when I say that ACTIVERAIN is the one tool without which my

business could not have grown or continue but that is the truth.

Facebook's Timeline... It's Here Whether You Want It or Not!

Facebook’s Timeline... It’s Here Whether You Want It or Not!

I very rarely (as in almost never) write any kind of post resembling something a Techie would write.  So I am passing this on to you so that you can make of it what you will and/or consult with someone to find out how if at all this will
affect you.

If you’ve been on Facebook lately you’ve probably seen Facebook’s FacebookTimeline.. sort of a “This is Your Life” for the Internet.  It HAS been optional and please note that the operative word here is HAS for Facebook will be rolling out Timeline and you don’t want to be rolled over.

I subscribe to Kim Komando’s newsletters and yesterday she wrote about Facebook rolling out Timeline.

My take is that if you have questionable photos from when you first started with Facebook and were young and impetuous, you might want to clean them up.  Some Facebook-ers have already been contacted by Facebook and told they had 7 days to clean up their photos before the switch.

Of course I know my dear friends here at ActiveRain have used good judgement in what they’ve posted but you may want to pass this on to your son or daughter setting out for their college or job interview.  Those party photos may be best kept in “Vegas.”

Kim Komando gives advice on what you can do to help protect your privacy and visibility.  You can for example go to your Privacy Settings and limit who sees old posts of yours.

Tagged Photos-” people tagged in your photos as well as their friends will still be able to see them.” per Kim.

I’m not even going to attempt to explain this but suggest you head to her site or go to Facebook and see how or if this may affect you. And please feel free to jump in and share what you know!

I'm Not Happy....Google Closing Picnik! Ughhhhh

I use Picnik just about every day and Kathy Nielsen just gave me a morning wake up with the news that Picnik will be closing as of April 19th.  I'm sure some of you more techie people out there know what's really going on and what and where we can go but in the meantime Kathy has given us a link to an article she found as well as a link to a petition you can sign to try to keep Picnik around!!!

Take a read...

Via Kathy Nielsen Atlanta Georgia Home Stager (Georgia Interior Solutions, LLC):

Google Closing Picnik! Ughhhhh

What a way to start my day. I awoke this morning, headed over to Picnik (my favorite photo editing ever) to learn that they are closing down on April 19th. I get a refund. Big whoop. I don't want the refund and I DON'T WANT Picnik going away. Period, end of sentence.

After throwing a tantrum, I went back to my computer and did a search to learn more. Here's an article written by Harry McCraken titled Life is Not a Picnik: Google Close It's Cool Photo Editing Tool which goes into the details of this decision.

If you've used Picnik, whether it's to crop photos, watermark photos, sharpen, and the list goes on, you too have come to realize just how easy a tool it is to use. In fact, I've written many tutorials promoting Picnik as it was just that good.

Also in my search, I found a petition, which I quickly signed. Here's the link: Don't Close Picnik!  As of this writing, they have 307 signatures and are aiming for 400. I'm hoping the list grows to 400,000.

My final comment - Google, Please do not close down Picnik. And if this falls on deaf ears, then please create a platform that duplicates the awesomeness that Picnik provides and make it available BEFORE April 19th!

Home Stagers- Stage Your QR Code to speak for you!

Last Fall I wrote a post suggesting 5 Uses of a QR Code for Home Stagers.  They were relatively new then but I love new ways to get my message across...especially if they're free and easy to use.

I knew right away that QR Codes would be a no brainer for Realtors... place them on your signs or flyers and direct your viewer to the virtual tour of your property.  And,since more and more consumers are buying smartphones (Android Smartphone sales climbed 888.8% in 2010),  viewing QR codes is not just limited to a few.

So as a Home Stager while I don't have a single property that I'm selling, I AM selling my portfolio of work.  My QR Code will take a viewer to the Gallery page of my website.  The view of the Gallery will change as I add or delete photos.

Room Service Home Staging

I also have the QR code on the back of my business card.  Directing a viewer to my contact information or even my website didn't seem to make as much sense as directing them to what most viewers want to see.... Before and After photos of a Stager's work.

Room Service Home Staging

The next step will be make a QR code directing viewer to my contact information.  This code will be placed on stickers that I can put on my inventory!

You Did It... You're Done, So I'm Going to tell you why you should keep doing it!

"You Did It You're Done So I'm Going to tell you why you should keep doing it"

reliefIf you've been participating in the 31 Days of May Challenge, then you're probably celebrating because with today's post ... you're DONE!!

You can now go back to having a life... your family will have to get reacquainted with you but it won't take long... you can actually focus on your day job!

Let me show you why you should continue to blog if not every day, then more frequently than you have been.  I've learned from doing this and I hope you will too.

                                                             Just Do It

J        JUICE- that's right... Google Juice....if you don't know what it is you haven't been reading enough  posts here, for example  read this post by Jackie Connelly.

U        ULTIMATE- As in Blogging, and doing it consistently can be the Ultimate FREE Marketing and Advertising  tool you have.

S          SEO -  Search Engine Optimization...you know the calls you get daily wanting to take your hard earned money in exchange for being on page 1 of Google.....read and follow Nestor and Katerina Gasset to learn how blogging and doing it the correct way can increase your SEO.

T         TEACH - You can use blogging to help teach others about your services and what you do.  When others know more about how you can help them... what it is you do... they're more likely to want to work with you.

D         DISCIPLINE - Setting a goal for yourself, whether it's to post every day or every other day.... or whatever you choose is a discipline that we could all use in our lives.  You set the goal!

O          ORIGINALITY- If you do choose to post on a regular basis, trust me you will have to learn something about originality to keep from sounding like all of the other posts out there.  And it is this Originality.... your Individuality that will attract your readers.

I         INTERACTION- Now this is where Blogging becomes fun.  When others begin to see you here on a regular basis they begin to interact with you... over a period of time you'll have friends all over the country... friends to help you with a question.... friends to support you when you need it... friends who will want to refer their friends to you.

T        TARGET - You can TARGET your market.  Realtors writing Long-tail search posts can target a particular neighborhood they hope to reach.  Read Brad Andersohn's post to learn more.   Home Stagers can target a particular kind of staging such as Vacant or Occupieds.

So there you have it.... you heard me

Just Do It!

How to Blog While Driving 75 m.p.h.

                                             couple in a car

Wait... You don't have to call the State Troopers!!

I'm just over the halfway mark in the 30 Posts in 30 Day Challenge  and it hasn't been easy.  As always, timing is so important.  I am now on my 2nd road trip since I began this challenge and since I am not a prolific writer, this has not been easy.

My scenario:

August 26- Write a post on the Google Academy,

August 28- Read about the Challenge and feverishly write a post.  I'm OK... I'm late getting in but I can do it!   Day 1... off to a good start!

August 30- I get the news that my dear friend has lost his battle with cancer. Begin 6 day road trip up north tomorrow for his services and to be with his family.

road map

So I now have 10 or 11 posts to write and we're on Road Trip #2 to see friends and Family.  I've made notes for some posts and some are partially written, but you know what they say about the best laid plans.

All I can say is thank goodness for modern technology because when we finally reach our hotel room later tonight, I doubt I can keep my eyes open long enough to even find my laptop.

So, how do you Blog while driving 75 m.p.h.?

The Google Academy- WeTeachGoogle.com

Yesterday, Patsy Overton wrote a great and informative post  on what she learned at the Google Academy.   I couldn't wait to "Google" it and find out if it might be coming to South Florida.  If you want more information you can go to WeTeachGoogle.com to learn more about what they have to offer.

Think you know everything about Google?  Hey I don't even think THEY know everything... yet.  I'm sure there's more to come.  One thing that Patsy shared with us was Google's FREE 411 Directory Assistance.  And, still if you haven't read her post, and the follow up one today,  please treat yourself and head that way.  Whether you're a Realtor, Home Stager, Home Inspector, Mortgage Specialist or any other Professional, we can all use this tool!

WeTeachGoogle.com also has training for Educators and Small Business Owners.  If you go to the site they share a daily tip, for example, today's tip was the FREE 411 Info phone number.  If there isn't an "academy" in your local area, they offer remote training as well as Group and On-site training.

Below is a schedule from their site.

WeTeachGoogle.com

Now, this doesn't take the place of RainCamp or the ActiveRain University ... knowledge is power, so why not take advantage of all there is to learn out there!!

Have more than one Google email account? Want to have easier access? Read on.....

Being the information hog that I am, I was reading my daily Official Google Blog and learned that if you have more than one Google account, they just made it easier to access them without logging out of one, then logging back onto the other.  This may not mean much to some of you, or many of you, but it makes life a lot easier for me.

I have had a personal Gmail account for years and recently added a business Gmail account.  I forward my "real" business account hosted on GoDaddy (kathy@MrsHomeStaging) to my Google account (roomservicehomestaging@gmail.com) to archive/save certain emails.  And, there were some times when my clients were not able to receive my larger emails when I sent them through my GoDaddy account.

Before Google made the change, you had to log out of one account and then log into your other one, if you wanted to use the same browser.

Now all you have to do is go to https://www.google.com/accounts.    Sign in.

Google Account Page

Scroll down to Multiple sign-in>Edit

You'll go here:

Google accounts

Be sure to read the boxes they want you to check because there are cases where the toggling back and forth may not work.  And if you do decide to go this route, they warn you to make sure you check in the top right corner to make sure you're using the email you want to be using.

When you go to the top right corner, you'll see your default email address with an arrow by it.  Click on it and there you'll be able to add any other GMail accounts.

I'm not that big a Techie, but I do like things to work .... the way I want them to, so if you can use this, have at it.

Want to have some FUN with your Photos? Take a look... . .

Want to have some FUN with your Photos?  Take a look at this site.

There are two things I know about myself:

1. I never met a gadget I didn't like.

2. I get bored easily and love changing things around.

So, I wanted to share this PHOTO CHANCES LAB  with you.  One day when you're just playing around and want to "fiddle" with some photos you have, give it a try.  There's a FREE TRIAL and a Single User License for $39.95.

Take a look:

Green Cay Bird   Green cay Bird with PhotoChances effects

Green cay Bird with PhotoChances effects

                                                Juvenile Anhinga with effects.

You probably won't use this for your listings but you could use them to enhance your blogs or just for fun.  I haven't even tried all of the different effects and don't know if I'll go beyond the free trial but at least I'm not bored anymore!!!

If you like Jigsaw Puzzles you can check out another of their sites: Brainsbreaker.com.  With this, you can create puzzles using your own photos or ones you download from the web.  The puzzles are stored on your computer so you can play them whenever you want.  No loose puzzle pieces around; no "cluttering" the dining room table.

I'd love to see some of your fun creations!!

OK, Bob and Brad, I drank the Kool Aid and am now hooked on these 1000 Point Challenges!!

OK, Bob and Brad, I drank the Kool Aid and am now hooked on these 1000 Point Challenges!!

kool Aid-Room Service Home Staging

It all began innocently enough  with Russel Ray's Nature & Marketing contest, then moved to Bob Stewart's Hyper Local 1000 Point Challenge; to our current  Local Business Challenge.  Who could ask for more?  Where else could you have a learning exercise in blogging and SEO, gain Google juice, and get Bonus Points?  I can't leave my laptop and my husband would like to pry it from my hands!

Room Service Home Staging

I've had so much fun, I can't stop!  Sharon Tara at Sharon Tara Transformations  agreed that the Challenges have taken over her life.   For me, it's not just the points, although bring 'em on!!  Sure I read Brad's Blogs and have bookmarked them and "intended" to use them as an aid to increase my SEO and Google presence.  However, I know that had it not been for the ChallengesI would still be "working at improving my blogs" someday, when I had the time, yada yada yady,

Instead of this:

Room Service Home Staging

I hope you've had as much fun with this as I have and I'm ready for more.
