The Wakodahatchee Wetlands-A Bird Sanctuary With a Very Important Purpose.

The Wakodahatchee Wetlands-a bird sanctuary with a very important purpose

I spend most mornings at Green Cay Wetlands walking but just 5 minutes east of Green Cay is The Wakodahatchee Wetlands.    Wakodahatchee means "created waters" in the Seminole Indian language.  And that is what Wakodahatchee is... 50 acreas of unused utilities land that have been turned into a wetlands ecosystem.

Wakodahatchee

Wakodahatchee has a three quarter mile boardwalk that circles through 3 pond areas.  Here visitors can enjoy their daily walks, get an up close and personal look at many different species of birds as well as, of course the Florida alligator, and have some excellent photographic moments, especially during the spring nesting season.

But Wakodatchee is primarily used for recycling water that has been reclaimed and treated.  The Palm Beach County Water Utilities District takes waste water and after being treated, filtered and disinfected it is used for example for golf course and other landscape irrigation.   The water that is pumped into Wakodahatchee either evaporated or percolates through our sandy soil and is filtered before it reaches the aquifers.

The next time you're out for some fresh air, take a stroll on the Wakodahatchee boardwalk... you never know what you'll see!
