The Barefoot Mailman in the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area- You've Got to Read This Story!

The Barefoot Mailman in the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area- You've got to read this story.

With all of the talk about closing post offices and cutting back hours, we've all taken getting our mail delivery Barefoot Mailmanfor granted.  However when my husband was doing some Geocaching several years ago he came across the story of the Barefoot Mailman in Florida.

If you go to the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area just off US1 in Hypoluxo you can see a statue dedicated to the Barefoot Mailman.  But that's not all, there's a 97 acrea area where visitors can walk through one of Florida's last remaining natural scrub areas.

There's a large walk up to a tower where you can overlook the whole area.

But what about the Barefoot Mailman?

In 1885 as more settlers came to southern Florida, there was a need to get mail service to the area south of Palm City (now Palm Beach) down to Lemon City (Miami).   Of course there was no I-95 or railroad... nothing but sand and water.

A route was created from Palm City to Lemon City by a mailman that would pay $175 every 3 months.  The route began on Monday and took 6 days, whereby the mailman often walked shirtless and barefoot over sand and in the hot Florida sun.

The first night was spent at the Orange Grove House of Refuge (for shipwrecked sailors) just north of Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach.  The route took him south across Hillborough Inlet and then down to Lemon City.  A small boat was kept at the Inlet for his use. After arriving in Lemon City on Wednesday night, the mailman would begin his journey back the next morning and arrive home on Saturday.  After a day of rest on Sunday, he would begin again on Monday morning.

There's so much more rich history here so if you're in the area head down to Hypoluxo, FL!
