Green Cay Baby Alligators.... A Follow Up!

Green Cay Baby Alligators.... A Follow Up!

About 9 months ago Larry and I were lucky enough to be present when the alligator nest we’d been watching for months at Green Cay  finally came to life.  That was August 23, 2011 and we were in for the treat of our lives.  Standing on the boardwalk for more than 2 hours I was definitely glad I had my camera with me.

April and May are mating season for alligators; the eggs are laid sometime in June, and then 65-75 days later they hatch.  Mama alligator stays near the nest the whole time and will continue to stay with them for up to 2 years.

We caught up with the babies and while there were at least 2 dozen or more when they hatched, we counted 5 today.    And, while I didn’t see Mama Gator today, I hear she’s often seen just under the boardwalk.

And what proud parent doesn’t have a video of their alligator babies being hatched!

Spring Has Sprung in Green Cay!

Spring Has Sprung in Green Cay!

While I love walking year round at Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach, spring is my favorite time of year there.

WHY?

Take a Look!

Green Cay Wetlands

It’s not just about the walking..... but about the hunt!   No... no guns or bows and arrows.... the hunt for nests.   The signs have been there for weeks.  Red-Winged Blackbirds have been seen flying with long blades of grass or twigs in their beaks.  To find the nest, all you have to do is follow their path with your eyes.  If you’re lucky, the nest will be close enough to the boardwalk to get a good look.

Common Moorhens build their nests closer to the water.   And some prefer the tops of trees.

And just for Easter... look what this marsh hare was kind enough to do....

As Roy Kelley always says I do have my camera in hand.

Green Cay Sushi Anyone?? Hey... Birds Have to Eat Too!

Green Cay Sushi Anyone?? Hey Birds Have to Eat Too!

Warmer weather has increased the activity out at Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach!   This was a little early for me to even think about sushi but this Anhinga didn’t seem to mind!

The Anhinga, which is also called the Snakebird or Water Turkey,  has a long snake -like neck and besides the Alligator tends to command quite a bit of attention from first time visitors when he is mistaken for some kind of snake in the water.  I remember the first time I was fooled!

Unlike a duck, the Anhinga cannot waterproof its feathers.  This allows it to be able to dive down for its prey, and stay down for longer than you’d think.  You can try to follow the Anhinga when it dives under but you’ll never know where or when it will pop up.

Because it lacks the waterproofing oil, Anhingas can be seen on logs or the branches of trees with their wings outspread drying off.

After a Tough Week Everyone Needs Some Play Time.

It’s Been a Tough Week...Everyone Needs Some Play Time.

Green Cay Raccoon

You’ve met most of my friends out at Green Cay but this little guy is very shy so it isn’t often that I get to see him or share a photo of him.  Raccoons are more active at night but when you’re on the board walk and with eyes and ears open and mouths shut you might catch them at play.

We saw them last year in the spring and they couldn’t have been very old.  Mom and the babies were still living in their tree.  But just a few weeks ago mom and her wee ones were out for some fun in the sun.  Raccoons will eat most anything and that includes garbage scraps!

Something I didn’t know is that Raccoons are one of a few animals who can descend a tree  head first!  Hey.... I don’t know about you but it’s not something I can do!

So, after our hard week, enjoy your play time!

E.T. Found at Green Cay! Who Knew?

Green Cay

E.T. has actually been around at Green Cay for some time but it wasn’t until a few days ago that I looked at this tree and Stangler Fig in a different light.   Maybe it was my mindset... maybe I was thinking of the movie but I can’t help but see E.T. in it.

The Strangler Fig begins when seeds germinate in the trunks and crevices of other trees.  In the heavy cover of a tropical canopy, plants must compete for sunlight and  finding a “host” may be a way for a tree to survive.   If you get a chance, Google Strangler Fig and look at some of the remarkable photos of these trees.

It’s very much like people.....sometimes we have to take a little extra time and  view them from a different perspective to see who they really are.

Speechless Sundays But Not Quite- Nature Imitating Nature!

tri colored heron

Nature sometimes imitates nature!

On a recent walk out at Green Cay I had to photograph this palm frond that had fallen from the tree.  It looked so much like it’s “bird counterpart” the Tri-Colored Heron.

The Tri-Colored Heron is a medium sized heron (about 22 inches) and is seen frequently out at Green Cay.   They can be seen wading in the marshy area for fish, insects and amphibians.   If you’re lucky you can see them perched on the railing of the boardwalk with a little frog for its breakfast.   I’ve learned when approaching them to watch which way they’re facing.  If they’re faced out away from the boardwalk  you’re safe... but if they’re facing the boardwalk... Look Out because they’ll do a fly by just as you pass.  I know that because I was almost broad-sided by one as I walked by!!

In the spring, the best chances of seeing a nest and their wee ones are out at Wakodahatchee.  Bring your binoculars and cameras!

Speechless Sundays (Sort of)- Mother Nature's Way with Colors!

Purple Gallinule

My favorite color is purple.  I love the movie “The Color Purple”... my Droid cover for my phone is purple.... one of my bathrooms in a former house was Violet Stone by Benjamin Moore... and one of my favorite birds at Green Cay is the Purple Gallinule.

The Purple Gallinule is a member of the rail family and lives primarily in warm swamps and marshes.  We’ve been lucky enough to spot them out at Green Cay in Boynton Beach, Florida but they’re not as prevelant as the Common Moorhen or the American Coot.

I love to watch them climb very gingerly out to the end of the stalks of Fire Flag, their favorite food of choice at Green Cay.  Known for their big feet,   I once saw an industrious Gallinule use his beak and foot to bend fireflagback the tip of the stalk so he could better reach their prize...a purple flower!

If you’re out at Green Cay, look carefully and if you’re lucky you’ll see the sun just glancing the wings of the Gallinule and that’s when you’ll see the most gorgeous colors Mother Nature has given us.

Speechless Sundays-(Almost)- My First Green Cay Lion!!!

green cay lion

Isn't it funny how we can see a place almost every day for the past 4 years.... walk miles upon miles...round and round the same boardwalk...with our heads looking high in the sky for our winged friends... or focused  out over the water looking for the always popular alligator and  miss another of nature's wonders?

And, I probably would have missed the Friendly Lion were it not for some of our friends who'd stopped to see the him.

If we never stop to look around us... seek out the different or uncommonplace... think about what we might be missing.

Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach Florida- Please Add Your Voice to Keep the Center Opened!

Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach Florida- Please Add Your Voice to Keep the Center Opened!

In May of this year I wrote of the need to take action to keep the Nature Center at Green Cay opened.  Well, we need to act now to keep our Center opened!  If you've read some of my posts you know that I walk there most every morning and have posted many pictures from Green Cay.

Green Cay

While the Center is still open, the hours have been drastically cut back.  What could be a wonderful educational opportunity for families, the Center is closed on weekends.  We have gone by on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and while we see parents showing their young ones the many birds and other wildlife there, it is unbelievable that we have to walk by this closed facility.

Inside the Center are displays about the center and water reclamation , a large tank with baby alligators, and a small theater for educational videos.  There's also a larger room for educational programs and a gift shop.

The photo at the left on top is the acreage before it became Green Cay!

Please join COBWRA (Coalition of Boynton West Residential Associations) in their efforts to persuade the Palm Beach County Commissioners to keep this Center opened.   If we want our children to love and appreciate nature and the importance of treating it like a gift to all of us, then we have to begin when they are young.  The Center offers those opportunities to children through Classroom Field Trips and other educational programs.

Here is the contact information of our Palm Beach County Commissioners. Please call, email or write them and let them know what Green Cay means to you.

There will be a budget meeting on September 13 that we are all urged to attend.
We can't complain if we don't open our mouths!
