July 4th,2010- Happy Birthday, America!

It's July Fourth and time to celebrate our Birthday-Happy Birthday America!     Happy Birthday America

July 4th is one of our country's great reasons to gather our friend's and family around a hot grill, eat endless numbers of hot dogs and hamburgers, and play in the sun until we can no longer stand to have any cloth at all touch our burned bodies.  It's a time for beach parties, parades and of course, fireworks.

But, like so many of our holidays, the real reason for the celebration can get lost in all of the festivities.  It's not that we're a bad group of people.  We just like to do things in a big way, and that includes celebrating.

July Fourth is when we celebrate our Declaration of Independence from England.  Actually we were still lowly colonies upset with having to pay taxes to King George III and England.  Remember- "No Taxation without Representation"?

Here are some interesting facts, though, that you may have forgotten:

July 2, 1776 was the actual day that America declared its independence, and was adopted on July 4th.  We didn't celebrate our Independence until July 8 in Philadelphia where there was a big party with a parade and gun firing.  You have to remember, there was no Twitter or CNN then, so news did not necessarily travel very fast.

When I was living in the DC area, one of my favorite paintings was John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence which hangs in the grand Rotunda of the Capitol of of the United States.  This allegedly depicts the signing of the Declaration but was actually a compilation of some of the participants gathered for the Continental Congress including one (John Dickinson) who had declined to sign and was not present.

Let's not forget what and why we're celebrating this great day.

And, take a peek at this wonderful reading of the Declaration of Independence.
