Veteran's Park in Delray Beach- Be Prepared to Have Fun!

Veteran's Park in Delray Beach- Be Prepared to Have Fun!

We in Delray Beach are so lucky to enjoy year round beautiful weather .... there's no excuse to stay indoors!  Our area has so many different parks for everyone, including our 4 legged friends, and one of my favorites is Veteran's Park.

Located on Atlantic Avenue and the Intracoastal, the park is usually bustling with activity during weekend artIntracoastal waterway festivals.  At other times, visitors to Delray take strolls through the park to see the Intracoastal Waterway or wait to board the Lady Atlantic or Lady Delray for an Intracoastal cruise.

Veteran's Park has an indoor Adult Center that's available for club meetings, classes and parties.  There's also an outdoor recreation center with 7 lighted lawn bowling courts and 16 lighted shuffleboard courts.

And for the young, or young at heart, there is a playground center that was designed by the children of Delray and built by volunteers.

Besides benches and picnic tables located throughout the park there is also a gazebo that can be reserved for special events.

Delray Beach's July 4th Sand Sculpture Contest... a Little Water, a Little Sand.. and a Lot of Creativity.

Delray Beach's July 4th Sand Sculpture Contest.. a Little Water, a Little Sand and a Lot of Creativity!

The weather held out for us and the beaches at Delray Beach were full of people out to enjoy our nation's birthday.   A favorite of everyone's is the Annual Sand Sculpture Contest, where participants began work on their creations at 8 a.m.

Each group began digging and making outlines.... and bringing in sea water to keep the sand in place.  Hard to believe that this

A crowd favorite was the Mt Rushmore Sculpture... It was actually a singing Mt Rushmore and everyone joined in.

ActiveRainPhotobloggerContest-I Cried Every Day for 2 Weeks!

When I first moved to South Florida, I cried every day for 2 weeks. Looking at the photo below, you're probably shaking your head and saying... "Are you nuts?"

Delray Beach florida

You see, I was in my late 30's when I first moved away from my beloved hometown of Houston, Texas.  It was where I was born; where I'd gone to school and even college and graduate school.  I honestly was so happy in Houston, I never felt the big need to move away.

Besides my family was there.... all of my friends were there... friends from school and friends I'd made through work.  Every year I went to the rodeo... I had great Mexican food at least once a week.... I was within minutes of the Mother-Ship (The Galleria Mall).

Everything was in order.. in fact I remember having lunch with a friend and making this remark;
"I'm so happy and everything is going well.... something's going to happen."

And, it did.

My husband's company transferred him to FloridaWe knew absolutely no one.  We still laugh and say "It's a good thing we're friends" because we did everything together.  As I unpacked and got settled, I literally cried every day for two weeks!  I'm not kidding.

However, within 6 months we'd moved again into our permanent house and met the family that would become our extended family.,.. . I watched only the National news... I kept my Texas license plate for as long as I could.  Noticing how much I still missed Texas, my neighbor gave me the best bit of advice I'd received:
                                                    Root Where You are Planted

It was then that my love affair with Delray Beach beganI gave myself permission to watch the local news...,.I allowed myself to not feel guilty over really liking the beautiful beaches we have....I went to every Mexican food restaurant Palm Beach and Broward County and, while I didn't find any to rival my Tex-Mex favorites in Houston, I fell in love with Cuban food.

So odd as it may seem that anyone could cry at the thought of being in such a beautiful place, I did.  But I wouldn't change a thing.  Even though we've moved away twice for work,we always came back. We chose Delray Beach as where we want to retire; and while I still consider myself a True Texan, and it will always be where my heart is...
how in the world could you not love this beautiful place called Delray Beach.

The Beach in Delray- How to Spend A Saturday Morning.

The Beach in Delray - How to Spend a Saturday Morning!

I love Delray Beach, our Village By The Sea!  And with two miles of public beachfront there's plenty of room for visitors and residents to enjoy a morning or evening stroll.  You can take one of the many paths that wind down through sea grapes to this:

OR... there are just some times when you don't want to deal with all that sand!  There's plenty to see and do on the other side of those dunes.  On any beautiful morning, you can see 2 and 4 legged fans of Delray Beach out for a stroll.

A1A, the North -South road that runs along the beach in Floridatakes on many different personas depending upon which town you're in.  Further south in Ft Lauderdale A1A winds through an area heavily populated with small businesses, residences, marinas and the famous beach from "Where the Boys Are".

Delray Beach, in Palm Beach County, offers a more sedate walk.  There's the Marriott Hotel at the corner of Atlantic and A1A, just a short walk across the street to the beach.

You can take a break and rest on one of the "Dedicated" benches or stop for breakfast at Boston's On the Beach, a Delray fixture for 28 years.

Delray Beach Radio Control Air Show flies high in Palm Beach County

The Palm Beach County Radio Control Association holds its WARBIRDS OVER THE GLADES 5 at West Delray West Delray Regional Park this weekend, November 6-7, 2010.

If you've never been, be prepared to cast your eyes to the skies and see these amazing aircraft take-off, do rolls, loops, aerobatics, "bomb" their targets and make you just want to go out and build one.

The Palm Beach County Radio Control Association is the largest club in the nation of its kind, with over 500 members.  The Air Show is an opportunity for the public to see these authentic replicas up close and to see them fly and perform.  They are so lifelike when in the sky, it is often hard to tell which is the real "bird".

Keep your eyes open for a B-17, P-51 D Mustang, Corsair, Grumman Bear cat, and other World War II Aircraft.

The event and parking is free. There is limited seating, but you can bring your own lawn chairs.  Donations from this event will go to Veteran's Nursing Home.  Don't forget your camera!!
