It’s National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day! March 29, 2012

Today is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day so it’s a wonderful opportunity to stop in to one of your local businesses and show them some support.   Goodness knows that the last several years have not been kind to small business ownermany of our business neighbors.   And  they are our neighbors!

The Mom and Pop businesses are part of the foundation of our country and they continue to be big supporters of their communities.  Look at your local Chambers of Commerce.... sponsors of local youth sports teams..... volunteers for community projects.

So, if you have the opportunity today, stop in and show support for your local Mom and Pop Businesses.

Hand's in Delray Beach- Office & Art Supplies Since 1934

Hand’s in Delray Beach- Office & Art Supplies Since 1934

Hand’s has been a fixture on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach for 78 years and in this age of big box stores it is certainly welcome.   In addition to office supplies, Hand’s carries office furniture, an extensive array of art supplies including hard to find items, stationary, greeting cards, calendars,  gifts, and books.

Hand’s is still a family owned business and strives to offer its customers the wide array of inventory that you would expect from a larger  retailer with the quality of service that comes from a local community establishment.

Lauren Hand,  City Clerk , Town Treasurer, and Managing Editor of the Delray Beach News, opened the Delray Book Shop as an extension of his love of writing.  The name was eventually changed to Hand’s because that is what the locals came to call it.

15th Annual Delray Beach Craft Festival is this weekend, Feb. 25th and 26th!

I love the season here in Delray Beach... there’s something fun to do every weekend and this weekend is the 15th Annual Delray Beach Craft Festival, being held in the famed Pineapple Grove District just north of Atlantic Boulevard.

Pineapple Grove is known as the Arts District of Delray Beach.  Formed in 1987 by a group led by Norman Raiden, NE 2nd Avenue, now known as Pineapple Grove Way has grown into a thriving arts, dining and shopping area  destination.

Speechless Sundays (no way)- Can You Spot the Silver Lining?

Delray Beach

On our morning walk at Delray Beach the skies were overcast and I thought for sure that we were going to get drenched.  But we threw caution to the wind and decided to set off without our umbrellas.

What was the worse thing that could happen if it did rain?  Well... we’d get wet, and getting rained on when it’s 75 degrees out isn’t all that bad.  We enjoyed our walk... said hello to familiar faces... walked free of carrying our umbrellas and guess what....no rain!

For those times when you’re held back because of what might happen....ask yourself what would be the worse thing if it did!

You might surprise yourself and realize it wouldn’t be that bad after all....and look at all of the positives to be gained!

Ellie's Diner- Poodle Skirts, Chocolate Shakes and a Pink '57 Chevy Mark This Delray Beach Landmark.

Ellie's DinerEllie's Diner has been serving 50's style meals for over 20 years in Delray Beach and is still going strong.  Located north of Atlantic Boulevard on Federal Highway, you'll know you're there when you see the pink '57 Chevy out front!

Everything on the menu sounds like something out of Dick Clark's American Bandstand...You can have "At the Hop" (Belgian Waffles) for breakfast.... "Johnny Angel" (Barbecue) for lunch... or "Only You" (meatloaf) for dinner.  And of course, there's the classic chocolate malt or root beer float.

Ellie's has grown over the years and now provides catering (they did my husband'sEllie's
50th birthday party) and Special Events... Elvis performs every Wednesday night.  There's also the Flamingo Ballroom for larger events.

Stop by Ellie's the next time you're in Delray Beach!

The International Coastal Clean Up in Delray Beach...It's the Place to Be If You Want a Clean Beach!

The International Coastal Clean Up in Delray Beach...It's the Place to Be If You Want a Clean Beach!

delray Beach

Saturday, September 24 Delray Beach will hold the International Coastal Clean Up along Delray Beach.  What better way is there to enjoy the beach and sand and help keep our beaches clean.

The International Coastal Clean Up, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy will officially be held this Saturday, September 17th with additional clean ups throughout the months of September and October.   With support and the efforts of Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful Clean, Inc... various beach clean ups will be held beginning on the 17th throughout the county and continue through October.  Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Jupiter, Lantana and West Palm Beach are just a few of the many communities participating.

The Ocean Conservancy and their International Clean Up has over 25 years become the "world's largest  trash bagvolunteer effort  for coastal clean up."  We've heard that it just takes ONE... and that's how the coastal clean up began.  One lady in Padre Island, TX, Linda Maraniss took it upon herself to do something about the trash she saw along the beach.  She organized a group that grew to over 2800 Texans and in just 2 hours picked up over 124 tons of trash over 122 miles of coastline!  (Thank you fellow Texans!)

And it's not just about picking up the trash along our beaches.  By sorting and analyzing what is being washed up along our shores, we can help show our policy makers and corporations what's out there and what we need to do to stop it at the source.  Data is not only analyzed and tagged but published by location in an annual report.

To register or learn more about Delray Beach's International Clean Up you can download a volunteer form at MyDelrayBeach

Volunteers will meet Saturday, September 24th at Sandoway Park, just next door to the Sandoway Nature Center.   The clean up runs from 8am -10am along the public beach in Delray.  Volunteers will be given gloves, trash bags and an event T-Shirt. Come early... according to Sandoway House Nature Center Director, Patrick Morehouse, they're expecting 500 volunteers!!!

(Not So)Speechless Sundays- My Alone Time with the MAN Upstairs

 Delray Beach early morning

Weekends are usually spent with an early morning walk along Delray Beach.  Just take Atlantic Avenue and head east.   As we walk along on the sidewalk, it's fun to watch the Peloton of riders whiz by. I'm always amazed at how close to each other that they ride.  One zig the wrong way and OOPS they could all come tumbling down.

Every Saturday or Sunday morning waves of them ride along A1A, some dressed in matching shirts.  The lead always warns the group as they approach the parked cars... "Watch out for doors opening!"    Then there are the lone riders, peddling along at their own pace.  I envision myself in that spot!

Delray Beach Bikers

Owners come out with their dogs before the beach gets crowded.  Moms and dads take morning strolls with their wee ones.  And sometimes I see people sitting in their cars, drinking coffee and reading the paper.  I always wonder why they don't get out and sit in the fresh air.

There are "semi" regulars there that we nod and say "Good Morning" to.... slim balding walker; odd slender couple who always travel with plastic bags; Ben who is at Bostons' each weekend.. same table too; stately lady with pulled back white hair; the group from a local recovery center, and many more.

It is here with the sun rising over the ocean... peeking out from the clouds and all of the life around me ... this is My Time with the Man Upstairs.

Downtown Delray Beach- Making Art a Part of Everyday Life!

Downtown Delray Beach- Making Art a Part of Everyday Life!

There is even the Pineapple Grove Arts District with small cafes, boutiques, retail stores and art galleries all along Second Avenue.

I know other cities have these but I thought you'd like to see them.  See if you can guess what they are!

Getting an Idea??

And isn't that more fun to look at than this:

Bike rack

I love the fact that we're able to place art in the public for all to enjoy and yet have it serve a practical purpose as well.

This isn't anything new... other cities  have had them for several years.  If you do a search, you can see how there are different influences depending upon where you live.

Take a look around your town or community and see what they have for your bike racks.  See if you can make art a part of your everyday life too!
