There May Be a Reason Your Closet is Full of Black!

black dressesThere may be a reason your closet is full of black.  I read an article in STIR by Sherwin-Williams in which it discussed Age-Related Color Bias.  Now the information in it is nothing really new or earth shattering but  it pointed out that many studies have been conducted that showed an age related color bias when selecting colors for building projects and architectural design.

For example, a children's store or children's hospital might have brightly colored walls in yellows, greens or pink.  An uptown gallery or restaurant aimed at attracting young adults may have dark colors highlighted or mixed with an attention getting color or something expressing the color of the time.  Whereas a more senior adult group (sadly... I am in that group) might  tend to choose colors that are earth-toned or neutral.

I'm not sure if this holds true or not.    For example, my closet has a predominance of black and white in it.  But it wasn't just recently that it morphed into a funeral parlor.... oh no, I've always been drawn to that for my wardrobe.  However, I love periwinkle and greens, certain shades of pink and buttercream.  Those are the colors you'll see around my house..... very rarely on me with the exception of green which I only introduced into my closet a few years ago.

But two questions come to mind:

1.  As we age do we, because of DNA, naturally transform from gravitating towards bright crayola colors to more earth-toned colors?  Or is it more a function of societal dictates or norms that suggest, for example, that "grown-up" colors are more subdued.... neutral?

2.  If any of this means anything, what, if any, impact does it have on the colors that we choose for our own homes when we decide to sell our house?   What demographic does the potential buyer fall in?

I don't have the answers but just wanted to toss this out there.

What about YOU?  What are your favorite colors and how did you choose them?  Do they mimic your age group?
