One of the reasons my husband and I chose to live in  Florida is because of the weather...  we can be outside most days of the year doing whatever activities we want.  And about 12 years ago that included diving (he did the diving, I drove the boat); fishing; and when we couldn’t go out in the ocean we took our smaller boat out and fished in the lakes.  When he wasn’t out doing that or working, he would go hunting.

And thanks to what I call a miracle or an angel watching over his shoulder, he is still around to do the things he loves.  One day almost 13 years ago my husband was out washing his car when he came in and said he felt funny.  After a few questions, I sat him down and gave him an aspirin.  He was feeling better but I decided to take him to the emergency room anyway.

This began a 4 month journey of tests, doctors visits and the passing of a dear friend.  After the emergency room visit in which nothing wrong was found, no apparent heart attack, he went to a cardiologist.  More testing.. thallium tests, stress tests..you name it.  My husband was not in pain, and in fact continued to go diving for lobster off the Boca inlet.

But every so often he would experience an odd sensation... not the typical pain though that you would associate with a heart attack. We even went to a gastroenterologist for more tests to see if the problem might be in that area.  No on could find any problem.  And, we had two other friends who were going to their doctors for similar testing.  What was going on?

Then one night, while we were home watching Eddie Murphy in “The Nutty Professor”, we had an urgent knock at the door.  It was our friend urging us to to call 911. She and her husband had been out for dinner.  On the drive home, he began to have difficulty breathing.  He was struggling to get out of the car; and she was having trouble driving and keeping him from just opening the car and jumping out.  They were in our neighborhood so pulled into our driveway. I called 911 while Larry went out to see what he could do.  Unfortunately, our friend ended up passing away at the end of our driveway. This was the wake up call we needed.

Before my husband’s next appointment with his cardiologist, I decided to take the bull by the horns.  Either he give Larry an Angiogram or we get a 2nd opinion.  That afternoon, they did decide on an Angiogram and the next day they scheduled an angioplasty... his artery had 99% blockage in the right artery and they were putting in 2 stents.  The rest of his heart was healthy.

I kept thinking of all the times he’d been out diving... 2 dives a day, sometimes Saturday and Sunday.  What could have happened during one of those dives?

It has been over 12 years... he is in great shape, no problems but I have to think there was some guardian angel... some little miracle that led our friend to our house that night to give us the wake up call and another guardian angel or miracle that watched over my husband while he was diving with that blockage.

Do I believe in Miracles?  I can’t imagine a life without themYou just have to keep your mind and heart open for them.

If you take one thing from this it is:
Listen to your body..(My husband’s doctor told him that his symptoms were  very atypical of a heart condition) . Take charge of your own health.   Women if there’s one time when you are allowed to “nag” and be a pest it’s when it involves your loved one’s health.
