My Thoughts; My Blog!

Time Is Still Marching On Whether You Are or Not!

Time is Marching On Whether You Are or Not!

This is the time of year when many of us are taking a look back at the past year as well as looking forward to what the future holds for us. We make clockplans that we hope will take us forward into the coming year as well as those to come down the road.

It is usually a time when we take stock of our lives, especially our careers, and especially when we’ve hit a certain age.   Are we where we thought we’d be?  Are we doing what we want to do?

Let me leave you with a very simple thought that was suggested to me years ago when I was considering a change.     I had already completed graduate school and was working as a placement consultant in Houston.  I was doing well and had even become a Manager of one of the offices.

However, I’d always considered going to law school or  taking more classes to get certified in Marriage and Family Counseling.  BUT.... and how many of you have found yourself here.... doing that would take me TWO years!

TWO WHOLE Years!!!       It seemed forever to me.  I'd already spent 4 years in college and 2 more in graduate school. egads! More school?!

But a very wise woman said …whether you take the courses or not, it will still be two years from now

OK...OK   that was over twenty years ago.  And, no I did not go to law school.

My point in all of this is don’t let the fact that something you want to do may take “x” number of years to do it.   If that’s all that’s stopping you.... go for it.

Time will not stop or go away.  Two years from now, God willing, you will still be here.

It’s your choice what to do in those years.

Will Your Life Be Full of Mulligans You Wish You Had?

Will your life be full of mulligans you wish you had?

If you’re a golfer or a player of games then you know what I mean.  As a Baby Boomer approaching (or maybe even there already) the return trip to the Mother Ship, I’m keenly aware of the fact that what lies behind me is much delray beachmore than what lies ahead.

With the end of another year approaching, it’s a great time to take stock of
your life...whether you’re 25, 45 or yes even 65.

Ask yourself what it is you want out of your life.   Yes, have a conversation with yourself and be honest... what is it that you want your life to be.  It is never too late. This question can apply to your personal life and your business or career.

Do you want to be married.. have children... travel?   In your business... do you want to grow it... take it to the next level..... keep it small and manageable?  Would you rather be doing something else?

Next get a game plan.... College?  Extra training?  Moving to another city where you feel you can achieve what you want?  Setting aside funds to retire early or have a second home?

Unfortunately, many of us coast through life, letting it take us wherever it will... either not aware of where we want to go or frozen by fear of failure.

Making mistakes is how we learn and grow.  We can claim proud owner ship for at the very least trying.   Not pursuing what we want or doing what we feel we should can stunt our life and diminish its quality.

Live your life so that when you look in the rear view mirror as you’re driving towards that goal line  you will not see a road littered with regrets and “if onlys”.

What Are You Doing to Put the BOLD in Your Dash??

What Are You Doing to Put the BOLD in Your Dash?

delray beachAs some of you may know I was away this weekend to attend services for my husband’s mother who passed away.  No sad comments necessary... Rachel lived her 91 years well and when the time came, I think she was more than ready for it.

My sister-in-law read a poem I know you’ve all read before... The Dash by Linda Ellis, and as I was sitting there wondering about my own “-”,  I began to think about what my friends and relatives would have to say about that space between my birth year and .. well .. you know.

Often we speak of how long someone has lived or how short someones life was.  That’s how we are... we can’t help it.  But this poem reminds us of what truly is important.. and it’s not the things we have collected in our years.. like houses, cars and jewelry... but our “collection” of friends, good deeds and actions.

It’s never too late to make sure your“-” will be more than just a symbol between two years.  Start now by asking yourself what you want out of life.... what are the things you hope to accomplish... and what and who are the important people in your life.

For me it’s making the time to keep in touch with people who play and have played an important part in my life.  I’m tired of people saying “I wanted to call you but didn’t have the time.”

It’s realizing that “things” are nice but they are not the measure of a man (or woman).  And so I’m trying to edit and simplify some of my “things” so I will have more time to spend doing what I enjoy.

And finally, I know I have so much for which I can be thankful, but that’s not enough.  I need to up my efforts to share that bounty with others.

So What Are You Doing to Put the Bold in Your Dash?
