Say “Good Bye” South Florida to Hurricane Season! Now What Do We Do with Our Supplies???

bye byeIt’s December 1, and that marks the end of hurricane season!  YEA!!!   It’s funny that many of our neighbors to the north are experiencing the beginning of winter weather and some may have already had some snow.  And I’d bet most of us in South Florida have put thoughts of hurricanes out of our minds months ago.

Hurricane season always begins June 1 and ends on November 30th.  So let’s see how this past season stacked up.....

There were 19 names storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.  Hurricane Irene was the first major hurricane to make landfall since 2008 (Hurricane Ike, which made landfall near Galveston) and the first to make landfall along the U.S. east coast since 2005.

So now what do you do with all of your supplies?  Obviously, there are many that you will keep in your emergency supply box.  And, it’s always a good idea to have your insurance papers, etc. in a safe place.  But what about …..

Bottled Water-even though there is an expiration date stamped on most bottles, as bottled waterlong as the bottle is unopened and stored safely, it should last.  It should be stored in a cool, dry environment and away from exposure to the sun.

Canned goods and non-perishable food items- If you have extra, it is the perfect time of year to donate some of these items to your community food drives.

Plywood shutters-  if you’ve had plywood cut for your windows, then they can be stored for use next year, however, be sure to label them so you’ll know which window they fit.  Be sure to store them in a dry place and store them flat so they won’t warp.

Additional medicines -prescription and over -the-counter-  these will have a shelf life, so use them as you need them.  Be sure to note the expiration date on these!

So, let’s hear it for the end of the 2011 Hurricane Season!  And, hope for a relatively peaceful winter storm season for our neighbors to the north!
