Hurricane Irene- Palm Beach County Information

Hurricane Irene- Palm Beach County Information

There's no need to go into panic mode because it looks like South Florida has dodged another bullet.  hurricane Irene is to be far to our east as it passes our coasts.

And while this may be true, because it is such a large and strong storm we could still experience tropical storm conditions.

Whatever the outcome, this is a good time to review your hurricane preparedness plans.  Here are some quick tips:

1.  Check your flashlights and batteries.  We don't need a hurricane to lose power, and if there is storm damage, power could be out for more than a day.

2. Bring in those possible flying missiles.  Again, we don't have to have a hurricane to have strong winds. Bring in or tie down anything that could become airborne and cause damage to you, your house, or anyone else.   This includes lawn furniture, plants, lawn ornaments and tools.

3. Make sure your cell phones and cameras are charged.

4  Have some groceries and other supplies you might need on hand.  No, don't go to your nearest store and buy every remaining loaf of bread.  However, even in a strong storm, the conditions might be such that you would not want to go out.

5. If you don't know how to text yet on your phone, have your child show you how.  During hurricanes and storms and even in other emergency situations, texting is less of a drain on your battery and may be the only way you'll be able to communicate.

If you have an iPhone or Android smartphone you can download a WPBF 25 Hurricane Tracker to keep up to date on the current locations. and forecasts.

As we all know, hurricanes have a mind of their own, so stay tuned to your local news stations.    And, ask yourself this question:

Had  Hurricane Irene headed our way were you prepared?

The 2011 Hurricane Season is Here- Are YOU Ready? Part 3

The 2011 Hurricane Season is Here- Are YOU Ready? Part 3

So, if you've followed this series.. What to do Before a Hurricane Comes and What to Pack... What do you do if a Hurricane is headed your way?

ATM      gas pump    medications  files  grocery

Hopefully you've followed this series and have made plans....you have your storm shutters ready, you've been storing bottled water, you have a To Go box packed.  What's next when your area is under a Watch or Warning.

1. Bring in the missiles-lawn furniture, plants, tools, anything that can become the wind's plaything needs to be brought in.  DO NOT start trimming now... they'll only become flying missiles!

2. Make Sure Your Vehicles are gassed up!  Get cash from your ATM!  If you need to, get prescriptions or needed medicine refilled.  If the power is out, you won't be able to pump gas or use the ATM machine.  Stores may not be open and if they are they may have limited supplies. Street lights may not work either.  If you have a propane grill, make sure the tank if full.  This may be your primary source of cooking!

3. Gather your tools, and make sure they're fully charged.  You may need to make minor repairs to your house after the storm... know where they are and have them ready.

4. It may sound silly but do your laundry! Think in terms of being without power for days, or weeks.  You won't have power, which means no AC... having fresh clothes will help you get through this.

5. Make sure your electronic gadgets are charged and that you have all of the cords, etc gathered should you evacuate. Back up your computer on a thumb drive or in the clouds (Carbonite).

6.Gather your important documents and place them in a waterproof box or bag.  Even if you plan on staying at home, you could lose your roof and you will want these papers protected.

7.  Put some clothing in a waterproof box or bag.  You'll want some substantial clothing too, such as tennis shoes, jackets, rain gear.  Don't forget your extra glasses or contact lenses!

8.  Get last minute food items (of course you've already had some staples ready).   With the last major hurricane here in Florida, one of the items people missed after several days of no power was fresh fruit and vegetables.  Don't hoard, just don't forget about apples, oranges when you're getting peanut butter!

9.  Keep it Dry-Again... there's always the chance that even though you stay in your home, you might lose your roof.  Get a large plastic bin and store some paper towels, bath towels, toilet paper, etc. for your use.

10.  Start bagging ice cubes and store them in your freezer.  Ice is one of the first things stores run out of.

A Few More Items

Don't forget your pets!!!!

Use Text Messaging on your cell to save your battery.

Have the contact information for your neighbors.

Good Luck... Be Safe.... Be Prepared!
