Hurricane Irene- Palm Beach County Information
There's no need to go into panic mode because it looks like South Florida has dodged another bullet.
Irene is to be far to our east as it passes our coasts.
And while this may be true, because it is such a large and strong storm we could still experience tropical storm conditions.
Whatever the outcome, this is a good time to review your hurricane preparedness plans. Here are some quick tips:
1. Check your flashlights and batteries. We don't need a hurricane to lose power, and if there is storm damage, power could be out for more than a day.
2. Bring in those possible flying missiles. Again, we don't have to have a hurricane to have strong winds. Bring in or tie down anything that could become airborne and cause damage to you, your house, or anyone else. This includes lawn furniture, plants, lawn ornaments and tools.
3. Make sure your cell phones and cameras are charged.
4 Have some groceries and other supplies you might need on hand. No, don't go to your nearest store and buy every remaining loaf of bread. However, even in a strong storm, the conditions might be such that you would not want to go out.
5. If you don't know how to text yet on your phone, have your child show you how. During hurricanes and storms and even in other emergency situations, texting is less of a drain on your battery and may be the only way you'll be able to communicate.
If you have an iPhone or Android smartphone you can download a WPBF 25 Hurricane Tracker to keep up to date on the current locations. and forecasts.
