Celebrate the Day- When is a Vegetable NOT a Vegetable? When it’s Candy Corn!!! Today October 30 is National Candy Corn Day!
I’m not a huge candy fan ( OK... just a little) but one of my favorites is candy corn.
And with Halloween tomorrow.. how appropriate! Candy corn has been around for over 100 years! George Renninger invented this Halloween favorite to resemble a kernel of corn and was one of the first tri-colored candies. Originally made by hand, the recipe remains pretty much the same but is now produced by machines. And, that’s a good thing.. how else would they be able to produce over 8 billion s pieces a year!
Of course, we’re not content to just have candy corn at Halloween, so now you can get red, green and white candy corn at Christmas or red, pink and white for Valentine’s Day.
Want to make your own? There’s a recipe for that! Or if you don’t want to eat the candy but prefer cookies, you can make cookies in the shape of candy corn! Want more of an adult version of candy corn? How about a candy corn margarita. And for the really crafty amongst you... a candy corn candle!
Now the real question is … How do you eat your candy corn? Do you pop the whole piece in your mouth.. or do you bite off the white tip, then the orange and finally the yellow???

Celebrations- It's Labor Day..A Perfect Day to Be Late for Something but NOT Your Cheese Pizza!
Celebrations- It's Labor Day..A Perfect Day to Be Late for Something but NOT Your Cheese Pizza!

You didn't think I'd let this holiday pass without some reference to food, did you! Yes, it is Labor Day, and for many of us this day marks the end of summer- a last chance for an outdoor barbecue- the beginning of a new school year, and alas... Labor Day Sales!
Labor Day was first observed in 1882 and became a National Holiday in 1894. It was proposed that the day be celebrated with street parades and followed with a festival for workers and their families.
However... did you know that September 5 is also Be Late for Something Day? Thank goodness it falls on Labor Day when many will have the day off! Like the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, many of us are always running late for something. Well today you can pick something and purposely be late for it!!!! And if you need to provide an excuse... guess what... you have one!!!
I like to be on time for things.. and often find myself early to events. However I think this day wants to tell us not to beat ourselves up so much if by chance we are running late due to traffic and best laid plans.
But... do get back on track because today is also National Cheese Pizza Day!! I did read that a form of pizza goes back to 600 BC when the soldiers baked a flat bread on their shields and then placed cheese and dates on it. I don't know about you but I could do without the dates. There are so many different kinds of pizza and I love them all. But for today you might try Emeril Lagasse's Three Cheese Pizza.
And just for fun... a video of the World's Greatest Pizza Dough Tosser! Warning.. Do Not Try This At Home UNLESS you have someone standing by with a video camera!!!!
Whatever you do today, please have fun and play it safe!
